End of the line for Desmond in Assassin’s Creed – Video Games Update
The creative lead for Assassin’s Creed 3, Alex Hutchinson, stated in an interview with Eurogamer that he believes that the main protagonist of the series, Desmond Miles, is holding back the franchise and needs to go.
"Things that go on too long, lack resonance. We're asking people to remember seven years worth of story,” stated Hutchinson while describing the plot of the game where gamers take control of Desmond Miles who has to relive the memories of his ancestors found
in his DNA. Even though Desmond is the main character, the majority of the game is set in the past with another protagonist.
The first Assassin’s Creed game was set during the Crusades in Jerusalem and featured Altair as the second protagonist alongside Desmond. Where the second game and the two expansion packs that followed (Brotherhood and Revelations) were set in the 15th
century Rome as a new side protagonist Ezio Auditore along-side Desmond.
Hutchinson believes that the problem with Desmond is that he does not get enough time during the game as the main theme is set in the past with the side protagonists only returning to the present for some story and character development. This apparently
is not enough as gamers seem to forget what was going on in the present after getting so engrossed in the past.
"It's more like the Twilight Zone. There's always a guy introducing it and he's there every episode, but each game completes its own story. Assassin's Creed one was Altair's story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually
without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up," said Hutchinson explaining that Ubisoft is likely to end Desmond’s saga.
But what does that mean for the franchise? Assassin’s Creed was pretty much Desmond’s story and if that ends will the series still continue? Ubisoft has been developing the character during the past four Assassin’s Creed games and gamers were naturally expecting
that the series would finally move out of the past and into the present for the final chapter which would end the series.
According to Hutchinson that won’t be the case as Ubisoft most likely plans to ‘milk’ the franchise even after Desmond is long dead and gone.
