  1. None of these people appear to know much about AARP.  It's an insurance agent just like you local State Farm rep down the street.  It started off that way too, and it's never been anything else.  It isn't even the American Association of Retired People anymore.  It's just AARP without the letters meaning anything at all.  They are non-profit only in the sense that they don't pay out the profit to anyone at all, they are retained by the owners of the corporation.  It's a 501(c)(4) corporation.  Note the (4).  What you'r used to is a 501(c)(3) that is a charity. This isn't. It's just another profit making business that escaped having to pay taxes on its profits.
