Endurance running or speed?

I am planning on joining the track team in a couple of years. When we had grade level track and field I got first place in both the 200 and the 800. My question is, should I work on my speed or endurance? I love speed but I was faster and better at the 800.

  1. theres 'fartlek training' which allows you to train for speed and endurance.

its combines running, jogging, walking and sprinting.

i simple training session would be 100m walk, 100m run, 100m sprint, 100m jog then repeat over and over. you can change this to how it suits you

  2. for track work on speed but keep up your endurance

  3. Congratulations on your placing.  You have the makings of a good runner.  I would work on both.  You need endurance to maintain your speed.  Work on hills and do fartleks, and challenge yourself doing longer runs...

    Good luck:)

  4. If you can, you should work on running mechanics.  You will then be ready for either race and you will actually be in a position to excel.  These are 2 different types of races one is definitely a sprint and the other is considered middle distance.

Learn how to dorsiflex at the ankle, use your glutes, 90 degree angle of the arms.  You can do some power lifting to help gain strength.

    Good luck!

  5. do whatever you feel like doing i do the 800 and the 400 and i am good at it. what was ur time for the 800?

  6. work on endurance, a few strides after a long run every once in awhile will keep your speed up

  7. I ran those events too and we would focus on hard speed workouts to keep up our endurance, but we would also through in longer intervals and distance runs to help maintain the endurance. Good Luck in track, it's so much fun.
