I have a light that says max 40 Watt bulb - would it be okay to put a 12W energy saver light bulb in it, that gives out the equivalent of a 60W bulb? I just wondered if the fact it was only a 12W it might not get as hot so wouldnt melt the light shade ? Thank you

  1. A Energy Efficent light bulb will not be as hot as a normal one whatever the watts are they also give out the same light so a 12 watt energy effiecent light bulb is equivalent to a 60 watt Light Bulb. So they are much better to use than the  Normall Light Bulbs

  2. yes it is safe.  Been doing it for a while.  the actual wattage is what you look at....dont worry about wattage equivalent. =)

  3. there will be no problem atall

  4. I can't guarantee it, I would think so. i've had different experiences with different brands of energy saving bulbs - try it and keep a close eye on it!

  5. Heat emmision depends on the power consumed. You could safely put a 40W energy saver bulb (if you could get one that bright) and it would be perfectly safe.

Tungsten bulbs work by raising a filament to a high temperature in a (near) vacuum. The vacuum prevents the filament from burning out.

With low energy bulbs the light is not a product of heat but an electrical process. The heat from these bulbs are a result of the process but not the cause of the heat. They run much colder.

  6. We are assuming this is a fluorescent or LED light, which is great, perfectly safe. Some bulbs are still on the market called halogen... they do save just a bit of power, but run much hotter than a conventional incandescent bulb. Just in case anyone is thinking that it is OK to use a 40 watt of any kind, it is not safe to use a 40 watt halogen bulb, even though the wattage is the same.

  7. go energy saving light bulbs ,sorr got a bit excited

  8. You'll have no problems doing as you say.

The energy saving light bulb will not get as hot as the traditional one.

  9. I don't like them and will not be buying them until that's all there is to buy for light bulbs.  had my whole house outfitted with them this past summer and let them ride till winter.   not much diff in my power bill and the light they put out is nasty.  so, im back to the incandescent as all people should be.  I yield the tub.   George Galloway for Pres08!
