Energy Use Monotoring by utility companies?

Question

I had always thought that saving energy by not using it was a hugely untapped area where lack of motivation was a factor.

I would like utility companies to provide online statistics from a competitive prospective regarding who is using less energy than they did last year. If my kids school came home with a energy saving contest that was monitored by utility companies, I assure you that every kid in the school would be shutting off lights and turning the heat down and the air up.

Any ideas on how I could start something like this?

Every electric bill from my company shows my energy usage for each month so they must have some info they can display about area usage.

Why would the utility companies want you to use less energy! That is how the make money, by selling it to you. If you use less they make less money. They only pretend to care. In reality they want you to use more.
