Energy efficiency: Entry door vs patio (frnch) doors?

I have a double entry door that is not energy efficient (brr-rr). I want to replace it. However, the guys at the big box store don't have much info on energy efficiency for doors. (I live in MN- it's cold here in the winter.) The door I want is very simple and our entry door is one of the least used doors in the house.

Question: It is better for me to purchase a fiberglass door for the entry that has triple pane or a regular entry door that is also fiberglass. The door I want is just a simple full glass door.

  1. Any entry door you choose should have a higher energy rating than the French doors you are referring to. It sounds like you are asking specifically about the glass in the door. This will vary greatly on the construction. Find out  the specifications. A triple pane window can have little to  no benefits depending on several factors. A dual pane window with a soft coat  Low E coating will have better performance numbers than a triple pane without a low E coating. But, when a triple pane has two surfaces coated with Low E, then you will have a definite advantage. If the windows offer a gas infill, then consider krypton on the triple pane and argon with the dual pane. The effectiveness of the gas will also be determined by the space inbetween the glass
