  1. 2-3$ at walmart...and are great for the environment and your power bills!

  2. Most of the basic ones are about a dozen for $20.

It's spelled fluorescent.  They're commonly called CFL's (compact fluroescent lightbulbs) to distinguish them from the older style long-tube bulbs.

A careful thing to look for is that they aren't going to be 60 or 100 watts or whatever.  They talk about 'watt-equivalents.'  A 60 watt equivalent bulb gives as much light as a traditional 60 watt bulb, but only draws 13w.  Now you know.

If you want, by the way, to save money and the environment, realize that they've got greater upfront costs in addition to lower operating costs.  Don't go whole hog and replace every bulb in your house.  Replace them as they burn out- don't let perfectly good bulbs go to waste (as the waste of resources of throwing out a good bulb outweighs the benefit of starting to save electricity early).  CFL's are not suitable for every application- they don't like can lighting, and putting one in on a dimmer or 3-way circuit will kill it rather quicly.  Don't throw them away, as they contain mercury- contact your local solid waste utility to find out where to dispose of one (usually for free).

  3. Here are some facts about Compact Fluorescent light bulbs:

One Compact Fluorescent light bulb costs $2 - $3. That may sound like a lot, but Compact Fluorescent light bulbs last 8 to 12 times longer than a conventional bulb.

An ENERGY STAR-qualified Compact Fluorescent light bulb can save an average of $30 or more in electricity costs over its lifetime

Lighting accounts for 20% of the average home's electric bill. The average home has approximately 30 light fixtures, which would mean an electricity bill savings of around $1,000 over the life of the bulbs.

ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs and fixtures produce about 70% less heat, so they're safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling

    Save Energy

To find out just how much energy you can save in your house, use our Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Calculator powered by General Electric.

    Save the Environment

When you change to Compact Fluorescent light bulbs, you take a step in the right direction to preserve energy resources and our environment for this generation and the next.

One Compact Fluorescent light bulb keeps half a ton of greenhouse gas (CO2) out of our air. Wal-Mart has over 100 million customers. That means if each customer bought just one compact florescent light bulb, it would:

Keep 22 billion lbs of coal from burning at power plants

Keep 45 billion lbs of GHG from being emitted

Equate to removing 700,000 cars worth of greenhouse gases from the air

Keep 700 million incandescent light bulbs from landfills

  4. CFLs--compact flourescent lights--cut energy use by about 75%.  The 60-watt equivalent, for example, only uses 13 watts of power, but produces as much light.

The reason is that old style bulbs lose most of their energy as heat, not light (as you know, they get very hot tothe touch.  The CFL bulbs get a bit warm--but you'll notice that tehy don't get hot at all--and that's where most of the energy savings are.

Costs run about $1-3 per bulb, depending on size and packaging.  I  sugggest going to Loews or Home Depot--they have better pices and quality than WallMart.  a pack of 6-60 watt equivelents or of 4-100 watt equivalents will run about $10. However--these bulbs last MUCH longer--ussually a year or more--and that offsets the higher initial cost.

Do remember to keep old bulbs and take them to a recycling center at some point.  Unlike the old bulbs, they can be recycled.

  5. The bulbs can range from about $3.50 - $15.00 dependant upon if it's a lamp or a ceiling can light.

They save energy.  The standard round lightbulb wastes 90% of it's energy to heat up and only 10% to light.  The spiral bulbs use less than 20% to heat and 80% for light - as a result, the spiral bulbs can use less electricity to fulfill their life's purpose.

Also, the standard round bulb will need to be replaced as much as 4x per year - the spiral bulb will last 6 years, that means you will buy 23 less lightbulbs - a savings of 11.50 per light fixture.

  6. Most guarantee their bulbs for up to 7 years, some 9.  I personally recommend cutting back your watts as well as switching to the Fluorescent bulbs.  60Watt is plenty of light for any room.  These bulbs are NOT $1 a bulb, although you really find yourself changing bulbs less.  Like office lighting they may flicker, and have to warm up.  But they are great bulbs, and yes they will save you money.  If you track your power bill you can the gradual savings, yes they use way less energy to glow.
