  1. The current buzz fuel at the moment in sports supplements is caffeine apparently - lots of the recognized brands now have a caffeine alternative to their usual lines, so they might be an option for shorter distance triathlons. I favour SiS over PowerBar, but that's a personal preference. Try to follow advice about when to take the supplement, as they take roughly 30-45 mins to have any effect, so taking it half way through a sprint tri would have little effect. For longer events the more carb/electrolyte products would probably have more effect over the caffeine ones.

  2. ditto on all gels work

The key is to find the right gel for you

you've got to train as hard as you race

because the worst thing you can do is to over or under nourish youself during a race...it can make for a very bad day.

Don't forget to take the weather conditions into consideration as well

  3. I think all the gels "work" in that they provide you with carbs and thus fuel or energy.  If your race is longer than an 1hr or so, you can probably use some fuel during the race. Unfortunately the only way to find out what works best for you is to experiment. Try using various prioducts in your training and see if you have any problems with digestion, etc. Some people have difficulty with one brand and not others. Power Bar gels are good for electrolytes for instance  and I know a local pro that can't handle Hammer but can take Power Bar gels.  Everyone is different, some can only handle liquids, some like gels, some like solid bars. You generally need water in addition to the gels and solids. Try different ones out and see what works for you.

  4. Probably.
