  2. Energy is always converted into heat, one way or another. Therefore, the ways to save energy are INSULATION and the RECOVERY of waste heat.

    For dynamic systems, as opposed to steady state ones, load changes are very detrimental to efficiency. As an example, while driving there is a substantial loss of energy when braking or accelerating.

    The higher the rate of change the greater the energy loss. Therefore, keep load changes SLOW, or, let them "average out", i.e., do not change the power input.

    If you have to have follow load changes, make your system nimble and responsive by reducing  the system inertia, be it thermal of mechanical.

    You can calculate the energy loss for a step input of a first order dynamic system from the following eqn.

    Energy_loss = 0.5 power_change * system_time_constant

    Which is obtained from integrating the change of power over time.
