Apart from the political reluctance to take on the environmentalist and other complainers are there sound technical reasons why we can not build barages across our esturies etc, and would they produce a worthwhile amount of energy ?

  1. There are no technical reasons why Britain could not build barrages. It has long been proposed to build a barrage across the Severn estuary and it may happen in the near future. If it were built it would a hydro-electric barrier and would generate 8.6 GW and meet five percent of Britain's power needs. Other large estuaries could produce power too.

There is also a thing known as a tidal lagoon and plans for two of these off of Wales could generate nearly 500 megawatts.

  2. no it would be a huge waste of money, you would only get energy every 6 hours and it would be ugly
