Energy saving/ Air conditioning?

Ok, it's getting very ridiculous in this house.

I come into the computer room, I'm sweating bullets, and I check the thermostat and the room temperature is set to 81-82 degrees Fahrenheit.

I change the temperature to around 76, and maybe about 2 hours later if I come back into the room I check the thermostat and it's back up in the 80s. This makes me go crazy how my dad goes around the house making the room temperature at 80 just so he can save money. I insist that making the temperature higher is only making him pay more money, but he ignores me.

For sleep time he sets the temperature to 78 degrees which is why I leave my ceiling fan on. But to no avail, because I wake up in the middle of the night only to find my ceiling fan off because my dad wants to save money. My body covered is now covered in lots of sweat.

I keep telling him the way to go is to lower the temperature from 75-76 that way we can live without my shirt sticking to my chest because of sweat.

My sister also has an issue with this, my mom follows in my dad's footsteps. Can somebody back me up so I can tell my parents that higher temperature = higher bills?

thanks =)

  1. yeah your right i agree

  2. You're correct. Setting the temp to 74 or so and leaving it saves as much money as setting the temp higher and having to turn the cooler on to cool things down when it gets to hot.

  3. Yes, you're correct that setting the thermostat to a temperature and keeping it there is better than changing, so since you're Dad is paying the bills and he wants it at 80 to save money and conserve energy, leave it at 80 degrees.  Higher temps don't = higher bills.  Only resetting to cooler temps and making the A/C work harder will = higher bills.

Kudos to your Dad--thank goodness he's a responsible member of the human race making the effort.  Both you and your sister should step up and realize the costs, both economic and environmental, of excessive air conditioning.

  4. If it is cooler than 78 degrees at night where you live, open the windows and get some fresh air cross-ventilation breezes going. It will help you feel much cooler.

Kindly direct your dad to the following web page on the Top Ten Tips to Save Energy:

Ask your dad if you can help him implement some of the above suggestions and help to lower your electric bill.  Then ask if you can leave your fan on all night (it uses very little electricity) if you unplug everything else unnecessary to offset it.  If he sees that you are interested in lowering his bills, yet you want to see all family members remain comfortable, he may be more willing to compromise.

If all else fails, you might offer him a few pennies a day (or a free chore) to offset your fan use.  I, for one, cannot sleep without a fan.

    Hope this helps!

  5. the compressor kicking on is the most draining of power with an air conditioner....so a house with a continuous 72.....would be cheaper than a house of 82...if you would be trying to get it down from there later....im always at 72.

  6. Start taking showers, it will cost more than the AC, depending on what type of a unit you have here is the deal. Heat pumps that have Air conditioning and a heater strip runs at it's peak between 20 degrees from the high and the low, they are most efficient at that range more than that they start losing their efficiently. At our church we installed a 5 ton heat pump and set it at minimum 55 and high of 72 even with poor insulation it has dropped our electric and oil bill by $2000.00 per year. And everyone is comfortable, makes for good studying and keeps you awake. Remember 20 degrees differnce makes it the most for your money and the rage I gave is what most heat pumps are set at. It also helps keep the bill down for the frig because it keeps it from running and when you open the fridge door the coolertemp in the house will stop it from running as much, because it won't lose the heat.

  7. Here are my suggestions, you can get a job and offer to pay the additional electric bill, you can get a tent and sleep out side, you can call child protective services and see if you can get placed in foster care or if you are old enough you can move out.

People lived for thousands of years without any air conditioning, there are people alive today who were raised before a/c. Perhaps if you learned to adapt to the world you live in. It isn't healthy to live in a refrigeration unit. If I were your day I would put a locking cage on the thermostat so you couldn't adjust it.

For a real solution to your problem, take anything that creates heat out of your bedroom, that would be tv, computer lights, basically anything that uses electricity, that will keep the room cooler. Depending on the weather where you live, it is likely it cools down at night, so open your window.
