  1. 50%

  2. A rough estimate about 125% for the extra heating.

By my reckoning I think a 50% increase will only take the temperature up to 60c.

  3. Changing to a lower temp for washing does save on energy which is dependant on whether or not your washing machine takes in water from your hot water supply or just takes in cold water and heats it up which is the reason why there is not always a definate answer to the question you are asking.

One thing i will say is that being a microbiologist and having a vested interest in lessening my energy consumption i still wash bedding and towels on a 60+c wash, the reason being any lower temperature leaves the towels and bedding teeming in bacteria, everyting else is generally ok.

  4. I would go with the third answer

  5. There isn't an exact answer but it's roughly around 50%.

The only proper studies that have been done on washing temperatures and energy use look at the reduction in energy when you switch down to 30C from a range of temperatures 40 - 90C. The official figure for this is a 40% reduction.

The reason the research was done like this is that people generally use a range of temperatures for different washes, but actually virtually all washes (apart from stubbornly stained whites) can be done at 30C.

Washing at 30 is one easy way to save energy, save money and help fight climate change.

  6. depends on the energy rating of the machine really compared to your old one?...A is the most effeciant, then B...THEN C... so it depends really.
