Enes Kanter goes to Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers spring a surprise at No.4 -NBA Draft 2011 Part 2
No. 3 - Utah Jazz
Enes Kanter
The Utah Jazz are rebuilding after losing Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams last season. The duo had carried the franchise for a while and it will take them some time to recover, but the Jazz have some intriguing pieces in place already.
They added another one on Draft night with Turkish centre Enes Kanter. The 6-foot-10 prodigy couldn’t play competitive basketball last year because of the NCAA; so no one’s seen him play quite a lot, especially in the United States.
However, what little we have seen and what the scouts have reported is very impressive indeed. Kanter is a serious talent and was all the rage back in his home country. The centre has good hands and is a very skilful player overall.
Like most European big men, the Turk prodigy is an accomplished shooter who can cause problems for the opposition. However he is also very good with his feet and can face up an opponent in the paint as well. These added qualities mean that Kanter, whenever he regains his game sharpness, will be a handful and a genuine big man around whom a team can operate their offense.
All in all he is a very good catch for the Jazz.
No.4 - Cleveland Cavaliers
Tristan Thompson
Yes, Tristan Thompson. The Cavaliers got a huge slice of luck when they landed the first overall pick in the Draft as well as another one in the top 5. It seems they didn’t want the other teams in the league to feel too bad about it so they picked Tristan Thompson with the 4th overall.
Thompson is a good player. He is hungry and a good ball handler. He also has a large wingspan and is an absolute machine on the offensive glass. He can cause some teams some problems.
But, the guy is also 6-foot-8, which is way to undersized for a power forward in this day and age. The player will get in the odd block and blaze past his larger defenders on occasion, but you fear he will become a liability on D against the bigger and stronger power forwards around the league. Imagine a 6-foot-8 guy guarding Dirk Nowitzki.
Doesn’t seem right does it?
He is a good player, just not a number 4 draft. The Cavaliers must know something we don’t, because we cannot make much sense of this.
Maybe they are looking for a trade, maybe as an option of the bench. Whatever it is, the Cavs are certainly not going to win an NBA World Championship before LeBron James if they are taking Tristan Thompson as the 4th overall pick.
