Enevoldsen, Tadic, Matavz and Zimling scored in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Groningen-c39119 3-1 NEC Nijmegen – Match report
FC Groningen defeated http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/NEC-c40018 Nijmegen 3-1 at the Euroborg Stadion on Sunday, April 24. Late goals from Dusan Tadic and Tim Matavz secured all three points for the home-side and kept their hopes alive to finish in the top four Eredivisie sides.
Pride of the North started the match with an aggressive intent, as the home side were coming into this match on the back of two defeats in a row. Pieter Huistra, Pride of the North's manager, was looking to upturn things in this encounter.
The home-side’s aggressive approach rewarded them early in the game, when they took the lead in the 21st minute through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Enevoldsen-c34947. The prolific mid-fielder took possession on the right flank and broke into the box before striking a left-footed
shot into the far bottom corner of the net to read the score-line 1-0.
The visitors were disappointed to concede a goal and replied strongly. Four minutes later, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Niki-Zimling-c27905 got excessively much space and powered his shot from 25 yards into the back of the net to level the score-line 1-1.
The remaining 20 minutes of the first-half action were uneventful and most of the action was played in the centre of the field.
Pride of the North resumed proceedings at the Euroborg Stadion in the second-half as they did the first. The visitors passed a scare when Tadic's cross found Matavz, who guided the ball through his head just wide of the post. The home-side were desperate
to bag all three points, but the visitors’ back-line was proving to be rock solid.
However, the home side added constant pressure in search of a winner and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 83rd minute of the match. NEC failed to clear Petter Andersson’s ball into the box and Tadic was quick to pounce on the loose
ball and slammed home to put them back in front 2-1.
NEC tried to find the equaliser with the time running out, but were unable to create any opening. Matavz ended their quest for a point in the dying minutes of the match, when Andersson’s pass found Matavz on the left and made no mistake in slotting home
their third to seal the match. Huistra was ecstatic after his troops’ emerged victorious in front of their home crowd.
Pride of the North are currently placed seventh in the league table, trailing the last UEFA Europa League group stage spot by three points. With six points left to grab in the season, Europe’s secondary club competition group stages berth looks achievable.
The outfit from Groningen will play their upcoming encounter against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/ADO-Den-Haag-c38221 at the Kyocera Stadion on Sunday, May 1. Huistra would be hoping that his side secures maximum points in this fixture and keep their hopes alive to finish the season in the
top four Eredivisie sides.
