  1. Actually, this info does help.

    ALCO built thirty of these in 1913.  I found a picture of CRI&P #961, a Pacific just as you described.  Unfortunately, further search hasn't turned up anything more, except the photo shows a Vanderbuilt tender trailing this engine.

    But, this still doesn't nail down the RI class of either class 43 or class 48.  As posted in the other answer, the locomotives are so similar that to identify class through a photo isn't possible.  But, if you are certain of the building date of 1910, then this would almost certainly be a class 43.  But there is a problem here.......

    As far as the 938, it fits into CRI&P Class 43, except for the driver size as shown at your link is inconsistant with class 11s, 43 and 48, by virtue of the fact that it has 72" drivers.

    You've got ME curious now, and I'll keep lookin'.  If I lose any sleep over this I'm gonna be pissed off.............
