Question:

Engagement Ring - Help us!?

by  |  earlier

I am helping my colleague at work to chose a diamond solitaire engagement ring for his girlfriend. We both think anything more than 1 carat looks too big and over the top. We think around 0.80 to 1 carat max is just right. Would do you all think? Just looking for other people's opinions? Thanks, Fluffy x x x

  1. mine is .98 and itsd perfect.  It was under 1 so the price difference is quite drastic and I have thin fingers and it looks perfect, not too big and not too small

  2. I think anything bigger would be too blatant and far too over the top.

It also depends on the size and shape of the lady's hand.  A lady with longer fingers can pull off wearing a bit larger ring than one that has shorter fingers.

    Good luck!

  3. It depends on the size of her finger/hand as well.  My finger is a size 3.5 and a (very honest) jeweler told my fiance that anything over a .6 carat would look silly.  He has a .7 carat in mind when he went to design my ring, but because he went down on carat size on the advice of the jeweler he then upgraded the cut and clarity of the diamond so it really sparkles!

And because my finger is so small, my diamond looks perfectly proportional and people can't really tell what the exact size of the diamond it.

    Good Luck!

  4. I agree. If it's too much larger people will assume it's fake even if it's not.

  5. It depends entirely on the size of her finger.

I have a girlfriend who's tiny and she has a 1 carat ring that looks enormous on her. Too big, truth be told... I have another friend who tall and thin, and her 1 carat looks kinda small.

  6. I tend to agree with you guys, I really can't stand flashy jewelry and anything over 1carat looks ugly to me.  My engagement ring is a 1 carat solitaire and I keep it locked up and rarely wear it anymore.  I prefer my really plain platinum wedding band all by itself.  I guess you have to just guess as to what his girlfriend would like.

  7. Hi fluffy,

Hmmm,It depends on the shape of diamond you are talking about..a round brilliant will look bigger than a princess and a marquise will look even bigger so it depends..

Princess cut is relatively cheaper than round brilliant but round is more classic. So what you pay with a 1 carat could get you a heavier princess cut.

I prefer princess and they are the fashion nowadays.I think 1 carat is the ideal weight IF you can afford it otherwise whatever you can afford is an ideal.

No the most important thing is to avoid local jewelers, they sell you certified diamonds for 2-4x of their price. There are online stores who are whole sellers and they stock more than 55000 diamonds! They sell GIA,IGI,AGS and HRD diamonds.GIA is the best lab and adds a value to you diamond.

I suggest you visit the site below

    http://123diamond.co.uk/Online_diamond_s...

and have a look at the stores,I particaularly reommend james for you. I bought the engagement r ing from them and it costed me less than 1800 but it was appraised for 5900!!I was very pleased. They also have some good policies like a 30 days return,70% of your diamond price lifetime if you want to sell it ( so you rest assured it can always get you a good value and there are always a buyer) and 2 years upgrade policy where they will deduct the full diamond price from the new diamond!

They also show actual pictures of the diamonds and certs.

look at the site even if you do not want to buy ,compare the aGIA diamonds with a same GIA diamond in a local store.

If you decide to buy online you will find here some coupons which will entitle your friend for 5%-10% off you just have to click on the coupon.

    Hope this helps

  8. bigger the better

  9. keep it real. over 1 carat would not look too big and over the top, its price would be too big and over the top for your friend.

anyone who claims they think over 1 ct looks 'tacky' or 'fake' is just being a hater.

it doesn't matter what size the diamond is, his future fiance will love it either way.

i'm just sick of people with smaller diamonds fronting like they think larger stones are 'ugly' or 'tacky'. give me a break.

  10. Obviously depending on the clarity and cut of the diamond, its value really ranges. However the carat size is highly dependent on finger size.

I have a 0.8 and my finger is size 3.25 and the ring looks bigger than it would look on a size 6. See what I mean?

You have to take that into consideration as well. If he really wants to get an over the top ring for her with a larger size and she has average sized fingers then it won't look really bad but on someone like me 1 carat or higher will definitely look over the top.

All in all, 0.8 carat diamond with a great clarity and cut is perfect in every way :)

    All the best.

  11. I have a .86 carat round cut solitaire, and I think it's HUGE, (I was expecting a 1/5 or 1/3 tops, imagine my surprise!), but not Overly Huge.... (Just Right, Huge ;)

I think you guys are on the right track
