home much does an engagement ring cost for the average person? some people tell me 10,000 and others tell me like 3,000?

I agree with the other person saying quality! i have a really nice ring it cost a fortune but it sure does sparkle from anywhere, if you get a low quality it will not shine as much as it could, mine is a 1.6 center with 10 other diamonds around it, it cost 14,000 but my man has been paying it off for years, go to a reg jewler, they will help you and it's better to give the business to a family place. Either way what ever you get she will love, get what you can afford cause the wedding costs a fortune!Good luck!

Average seems to be around 1,000 or less. Totally depends upon the budget of the groom to be!

It really depends on your budget.  You can get lovely rings for under $1000, like smaller, but excellent quality stones, or a 1 carat that is really low quality (visible inclusions and bad colour) for under $2000.  A good quality 1 carat diamond starts at around $8500 on bluenile.com (they have the best prices anywhere basically).

My ring is a .6 carat excellent cut, colourless, Canadian diamond, set in white gold with a .3 carat pink sapphire on either side of it (like a three stone ring).  It was $3500.  That being said, my fiance designed it and had a friend of the family who is a jeweler make it for me, so my fiance only paid wholesale prices (for the diamond, sapphires and metal) and only paid for the labour (the few hours it took to physically make the ring), there was NO mark-up on my ring, which unless you personally know a jeweler who will do this for you, you will pay some mark-up anywhere you buy.

If he had bought a similar ring, or designed this ring at a jeweler it would have cost close to $6000.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to set a budget and stick to it.  Avoid mall jewelry/chain stores, they have so much mark-up, and they use horrible selling tactics.  Buy quality over quantity (carat size), and great quality diamond (excellent cut, clarity and colour), no matter the size will sparkle across the room (I know mine does), but a huge, cheap, low quality diamond will be a dud.

Well, the diamond cartel DeBeers started that diamond ring thing back in the 20s or 30s.  Before that, most people didn't have engagement rings at all, and those who did had rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc.  It was the DeBeers cartel that started the tradition of an engagement ring costing 2 times the man's monthly salary.  They had very good advertising people because that campaign started the tradition of a man spending 2x his salary on a ring.

So the answer is it depends on if you want to go by DeBeers tradition or not.  If you do, spend twice your monthly salary.  For instance, if you make $36,000 a year that breaks down into $3000 a month. Multiplied by 2 = $6000.

My ring was $250.00. It is white-gold with a blue stone. I had never been a big fan of diamonds. I really did not care what kind of ring I got as long as the love and thought behind it was priceless.
