  1. I would suggest a plain band.  A lot of guys don't really like wearing jewelry, so he probably wouldn't want anything that would stand out too much.

  2. First thing's first: have you talked to your boyfriend about wanting to get married? If you haven't and are just planing on surprising him with a ring (i.e., the way a guy would surprise a girl), you may want to approach him with the subject.

The thing is, a lot of guys out there believe it is their responsibility to take the relationship to "the next level". Therefore, when his girlfriend takes this responsibility on herself, it may make him think that she thinks he may not be able to step up to the plate, which is a hard hit on a man's ego.

I'd suggest talking to him about marriage before you simply spring a ring on him. This way, you would know what his intentions are, if he's ready, and be able to find out if he'd prefer to propose to you.

Also, promise rings really are quite pointless so I would steer clear of that idea. Giving some one a ring that says "This ring is my promise to get you *another* ring someday" is pretty redundant, don't you think?

  3. You could get him a simple silver band. If he doesn't like wearing it on his finger he could always wear it on a chain.

I have a website - http://stores.ebay.com/The-Promise-Ring-... - that has loads of information about the history of promise rings, that you could check out if you want to learn more.

  4. I got my fiance a tungsten carbide ring from zales that is really cool after he got me an engagement ring. It's my engagement ring for him. The only drawback to tungsten rings is that they need diamond cutters to get cut off (in the event of an accident with his hand). If this freaks you or him out, either titanium or a stainless steel ring is nice, too, but heavier. Find a style you like and you think he'd like. Probably less formal than a traditional wedding band, but definitely stylish.

  5. What about a Claddagh Ring? It stands for love, friendship, loyalty.

I'm getting one for my boyfriend on our next anniversary, it'll be two years. You can get them with or without gems, gold or silver. Whatever you like. They aren't that expensive either.
