Question:

Engagement/wedding rings? Too big?

Okay, this may sound dumb, but I am not sure how all this works as I have never been engaged before and my mom isn't around to tell me how it really works! My boyfriend recently bought my engagement ring after 3 years. The center diamond is 1ct marquise and directly on the sides it has baguettes and then on the out side that would look like a wedding band but is all put together on both sides are round brilliant cut diamonds which total the engagement ring at 2.50cts. Now my question is this.... do you still get another wedding band? I am sort of confused about how to do this if we will be looking for wedding bands as well, or if what I have is it or is it just personal preference? I mean, how do you put another one or two sides to this already pretty large ring? I am not vain and don't need anything too big, but since we are doing a really small wedding, we invested more in the jewelry since I will wear it the rest of my life and not something that just lasts one day! No smartass answers would be appreciated it but I just want to know if what I have should be it, or are you suppose to get another one?! Thanks!

  1. It is personal choice. I know people who don't get them and people who do. I wanted a wedding band, so I got one. My center stone is also a carat, but it is round brilliant, so it might be easier to find one that matches than a marquise.

  2. You can go with a simple band that can be worn at times when a larger ring might be awkward, and later add an eternity band, or you can get a ring guard. But you're right, too much jewelry on one finger can prove unwieldy. You can use the same ring again for the ceremony, but a very thin wedding band(perhaps 2mm) could be used and then only worn at chore time. Make sure it has a little detailing, like filigree, to make it interesting and not just a plain band next to your lovely e-ring.

The ring is just the symbol, as long as you find a way to incorporate any ring that you use into the ceremony or have it represent some occasion in your lives, shouldn't you get to wear whatever jewelry you please?

  3. My engagement ring is substantial (not as much as yours though!) and I wear it as my wedding ring.  It is a work of art, 18k yellow gold and platinum, lots of curlicue and engraved pattern on the silhouette and around the band.  We didn't want to have a band custom made to go with it and I loved the ring so much I was very content to wear only it for the rest of my life.

  4. It sounds like you have a set that has already been soldered (welded) together so you wouldn't add another ring.

Alot of times the rings are sold as a set but are not connected. Like this: http://www.zales.com/product/index.jsp?p...

in which case you would wear the engagement ring piece now and then add the wedding band piece on your wedding day.

  5. Usually, you get a wedding band as well as an engagement ring.  The wedding ball is generally smaller and simpler.  When you wear the rings, you put the wedding band on first and then the engagement ring on over it.  If you go to a jeweler's and try on different rings, you may be able to find something that looks good with the engagement ring.  However, if you want to skip the wedding band and just wear an engagement ring, that is acceptable as well.

  6. No, you don't need another wedding band. Maybe one for him, but that is it.

  7. I got engaged 4 months ago, and your ring sounds a lot like mine.

The center diamond is 1ct marquise and directly on the sides it has baguettes.  And then on both sides of that there are like 2 bands with diamonds on both bands.  So its like all 3 put together. Its soo weird , your discription sounds just like mine.  I would love to see a picture of it to see if it is the same.

But to answer your question, we were told its just our opinion if you want another band get another band.  Or the engagment ring could actually work for both the engagment ring and the band.  So its realy just your opinion, whatever you like.

I chose to get another band, its almost identical to the bands on the sides, but I wanted a band to have on the actual wedding day.   The lady at the jewlery store said it can be done either way with or without a different band.  She said if you chose to get a band, to put on with the engagment ring, then later on down the road, like for an anniversary you could get another band to put on the other side to even it up! Congrats on the engagment!
