Question:

Engine Hatch, Insulation Repair?

I have your basic engine hatch on my deck, that folds down on 2 hinges. The problem is the insulation inside. From years of heat and what not, the glue is letting go on the thin silver heat shield lining, and its ripping and sagging. This one is beyond repair, I need new silver lining but not sure where to get that. Also, it was attatched to a foam padding insulation under it, and was wondering how to glue the new one down, spray glue??

  1. The silver lining and foam insulation go together; you can't replace one without the other.

The insulation on your hatch must be rated for heat value- the noise reduction issue is secondary. Look for a combined thermal/sound shield made specifically for marine use- you don't want something that will get mold or will suffer chemical breakdown after long term exposure to petroleum fumes. Get something rated for commercial use, too. The stuff you'll get at a yacht outfitter's is c**p. It's not too pricey, either. The manufacturer will have instructions on what kind of adhesives are compatible with the insulation. Check out the folks who advertise at places like www.nationalfisherman.com and places like that.

  2. Hay, it is called Sounddown, and you can get it at most any marine retailer. also it comes with new anchors. have fun

  3. Tear it all out.

Call around to local stereo shops.

Like ABC warehouse - and suck - that does installs.

What you want is self adhesive dymomat

That is a sound and heat reflector.

Also eliminates a lot of road noise.
