If they dont match...is it a problem ? Does it mean the bike has replacement/stolen parts ? Thanks.

  1. Frame numbers have to do with the certification and liability of the frame manufacturer... engine numbers have to do with how many are produced and what year etc. NONE have to match... the reason you have a seperate VIN number (sticker on frame) is to be able to track the other numbers... the motor vehicle mfg'r keeps records so if you need to know the engine # that came on Vehicle with VIN abcdefg... then they go to their files and find out they built it with eng # qrst and frame # wxyz

  2. Engine and chassis bothe are different but there is no problem. match the both numbers given in your Registration Slip/ book.

  3. The numbers on the motor and frame should match, if they don't..then yes that would indicate that the motor has been changed. Doesn't mean it has stolen parts, it just means the motor is not the one that came on the frame.

Either the motor was blown and changed, or the bike was down so hard that it damaged the frame and they found a donor frame and swapped everything to it.

As far as stolen parts go...I would definately have the numbers ran on the fram and motor, they tend to be a little easier on receiving stolen goods if you initiate the check, than they are if a year or two goes by and you get pulled over and they check it.

But yep, the answer is the numbers should match.

  4. About 15 years ago, having the same engine & chassis number was the norm.  However this practice is no longer being followed for reasons best known to the manufacturers.  The current trend shows the engine and chassis numbers to be totally different and distinctive.

So ... please put your mind at rest.  If the two numbers on your vehicle, match with the numbers given in your Registration book, it is OK and valid.
