Engine changes will ruin Formula 1 – Luca di Montezemolo
Ferrari’s boss Luca di Montezemolo has not been happy about the decisions the FIA has been making since the past couple of months. The FIA revealed that Formula 1 will use more efficient engines in 2013 that would require lesser fuel and as a result, lesser
power according to their official rules and regulations report.
The report stated that the cars will have to use a four-cylinder turbo in 2013 after which Luca stated that it would affect the sport negatively.
“Four cylinders is not formula one. We will not be building any for our street cars [and] for the top class of racing it sounds a bit pathetic. Why couldn't we have a V6 turbo? We should not confuse affordable with cheap,” he said.
One has to admit that the reason why people come to watch Formula 1 live is to listen to the roar of the engine and beautiful noise of a V8 engine. If the FIA takes that away from the teams, then most of the fans would prefer watching Formula 1 on the television
more.
“If there is the slightest possibility to delay the four cylinder [introduction], I will look for it. We see a chance. We need unity,” he added.
However, it seems that it was just a rough idea by the FIA and they are obviously still thinking about the developments and ideas for the 2013 Formula 1 season. As we all know, fuel is now extremely expensive and since Formula 1 is going through its biggest
financial crisis to date, the FIA wants to decrease fuel costs by 25%.
It is expected that most of the teams are going to oppose this development as well since it is too early to introduce such a huge change to the sport.
“It would have been better to extend the V8 era. That [V8] is a low-cost engine,” agreed Norbert Haug, with the German engine marque currently leading the field with F1's current engines.
According to Cosworth’s Mark Gallagher, it would only require €30 million to design an engine according to the new 2013 Formula 1 regulations but it is quite clear that the FIA has many other options as well and it is just a matter of time that the organization
reveals its plans for 2013 in more detail.
