Engine will start and cut off

Question

What would be the reason that make this happen? It will start and cut off in about 2-5 sec.

lack of fuel most likely try a fuel filter and a bottle of  fuel treatment...

You need to be more specific to get better answers. Make and model of the car, how the motor runs before it cuts off, etc.

Edit: With these new cars, anything is possible. It could be a fuel problem, but it could also be electronic. My car had a bad ignition switch, which kept setting off the anti-theft computer. When it did, it would start and run normally for around 2-3 seconds, then the engine would turn itself off. No sputtering or stalling, the motor just stopped like the key was turned off.

It could be your fuel pump, what will happen if you have a bad relay is that the fuel pump will run for about 5 seconds after you cycle the key then after that the pump will stop. I would check your fuel relay to make sure it is working properly, fuel relays vary from car to car, on my 86' camaro it is the 2nd relay on the right side of the firewall in a line of a total of 3
