Question:

Engineering Jobs as a new college Graduate?

I am a fairly-recent college graduate (May, 2007) with a BS in Electrical Engineering. My internship and eventual employment were with an IT company as a Web Developer. Due to slow business, however, I was recently laid off. I would like to take this opportunity to move into the Engineering field, but it seems like all of the positions that companies in my area (metro Detroit) post are either for internship positions which require current attendance in school or for experienced engineers.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to break into the Engineering field when my work experience (2 1/2 years) has been in Web Development? Has anyone started an Engineering internship after graduation?

  1. If you are interested in relocating, the company that I work for is hiring several engineers at this point.

We are located in Florence KY

Go to Monster and look for Sweco.

  2. Personally, I've never thought much of the whole internship thing. Who wants to work for free after you've already graduated? With a degree in EE you have a degree that is in high demand with a large spectrum of opportunities. Consider trying to get on board with a smaller company. In some instances you might have to sacrifice benefits and pay but you'll get the experience you need to move up to that dream position, whatever it may be. I went from the ultrahigh tech semiconductor manufacturing industry to HVAC Control Systems which has proven to be very rewarding for me so don't count anything out. Good luck.
