A proton is accelerated through a potential difference of 5.0 x 10^6 V. How much kinetic energy has the proton acquired? Answer in units of J.

  1. power = current * voltage

    multiply by time to get:

    Energy = charge * voltage

    For energy, path the proton takes doesn't matter; the voltage represents a difference in potential.

    Since proton charge = eletron charge = 1,

    E = 5e6 eV (electron volts)

    convert using 1 eV = 1.602x10^-19J (ie multiply together).
