  1. At one time long ago (and even today!) there were civil and military engineers.  They had similar skills but different purposes (bridges vs fortifications, etc.).  Now there are many specialties such as electrical, mechanical, marine, chemical and aeronautical engineering, etc. (and military engineers at West Point too).  Thus civil engineering has retained its own specialization.  Civil engineers still design bridges and large structures such as mill bents (or factories with overhead traveling cranes on rails).  Civil engineers supervise large earth-moving projects such as earthen (and concrete) dams.  They also design airport runways.  Civil engineers design and direct installation and maintenance of city water supply and sewer systems and general road construction.  County, city and town engineering departments are usually supervised by civil engineers.  Of course, civil engineers have to study the basics of the other engineering disciplines in order to coordinate experts from different fields.

  2. Old joke with a grain of truth:  Mechanical Engineers design weapons, Civil Engineers design targets.  Point:  If it is worth bombing, it was designed and built by Civil Engineers.
