The maximum compression force on a steel connecting rod is 15400N and the maximum tension is 6600N. If the length of the rod is 320mm and its cross sectional area is 415mm square , find the difference between the greatest and the least lengths of the rod.

Young's modulus for steel is 208kN per mm square.

  1. greatest length upon tension is:

    ε =σ /E

    = 15400 / 208,000

    = 0.074

    ∆l= ε L = 0.074* 320 = 23.7 mm

    greatest length = 23.7 + 320 = 343.7 mm

    least length upon compression is:

    ε =σ /E

    = 6600 / 208,000

    = 0.032

    ∆l= ε L = 0.032* 320 = 10.2 mm

    greatest length = 320 - 10.2 = 309.8 mm

    Difference = 343.7 - 309.8 = 33.9mm
