  1. Square is to a rectangle what England is to Britain.

A rectangle is not necessarily a square, and Britain does not necessarily refer to England.

Just to confuse you even more!

Like all the others said, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are countries that together make the UK.

If you REALLY want to confuse yourself, try and work out where the Isle of Mann falls into all of this... I've read and reread that wikipedia article so many times, and I'm still confused.... and I've got family over there!

  2. The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland is the name of a political entity.

Great Britain/ Britain is the name of an island. It is a geographical feature like "Scandinavia" or "Iberia".

Although England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland are joined together now, they were originally independent of each other. For that reason people identify more with being English, or Scottish etc. than with being British.

The "British" identity, like the United Kingdom itself, was always an artificial creation anyway.

    I hope that helps! :)

  3. Britain and UK are the same thing pretty much because its the name of all the countries combined.

England is just one country in Britain.

  4. You asked what we like to be called not what qualifies as what. I prefer the name 'The United Kingdom' . Makes us sound pretty good and its a place to be proud of.

  5. whatever ... just DON'T call me a limey

  6. England is a country in Britain. Britain is England , Scotland and Wales.  THe Uk (United Kingdom) is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  There you go.

  7. England is a country on the Island of Great Britain along with the country of Scotland and the principality of Wales

The United Kingdom is Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) plus Northern Ireland

    The Uk's full name is:

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

so some from England can be English and British, but they aren't the same thing, just as someone from Scotland can be Scotish and British and someone from Wales can be Welsh and British.

and someone from Northern Ireland is a British Citizen but can choose to be Irish

People from Scotland, Wales and England are all British Citizens but will generally call themselves by the country they come from.

I am a British Citizen offically, but i will call myself English and not British, because that has more meaning to it, because it shows where i am from within Britain
