  1. Ireland is an independent country.  England, Scotland and Wales along with N. Ireland are subdivisions of the United Kingdom.  They are sometimes called constituent countries.

  2. United Kingdom;separated from continental Europe by the English Channel, the United Kingdom consist of Great Britain(England,Wales and Scotland),a number of smaller islands, and Northern Ireland.

Ireland;lying in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Britain, the Irish republic occupies about 85% of the island of Ireland , with the remainder (Northern Ireland)being part of UK.

  3. so u have "the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland" which is that big island {england, and n ireland on the tip}. great britain IS england, one individual country. the ireland which is a totally different country is the island to the left of england.

  4. they were at one time individual countries but decided that combining forces was more profitable than fighting among themselves. scotland was the last one to join and had to be subjugated. great britian is the combination of the four. and lest there be confusion only northern ireland is included with the rest of ireland being the republic of ireland.
