Help me with this one please, I'm a bloody American...

Hot Fuzz, one of my favorite movies, was filmed in Somerset and I want to visit it when I visit England for the first time next month. My question is...how do I find it? How do I decipher "England's smallest City of Wells, Somerset?" Is Wells the equivalent to a state here in the US?

Thanks.

  1. a good website for finding places is www.multimap.com ... if you go to that website, make sure the country is set to UK and then enter Wells it will pull up a map for you ... you can zoom in and out on the map etc

Wells is the name of the city ... it's a place that gained its city status a long time ago but failed to grow like other cities did so now it's probably more equivalent to a small town ... it's in the county of Somerset which is in the west of England ... it is a very pretty part of the country ... the nearest places of interest are probably Bath (which has the ancient Roman baths), Bristol (with it's port area and suspension bridge), Cheddar Gorge (caves)

  2. We don't have states, but we do have counties. They're something in between your states and your regions- counties don't have specific laws (England's laws apply throughout England)

Wells is in Somerset. Somerset being the county. Counties mean nothing in England- there's no difference between one county and another, apart from local councils.

Wells was chosen because it's such a reclusive, small place. Believe me, there's nothing to see there.

  3. Wells is in Somerset and has a stunning medieval cathedral, one of the most beautiful in England. Behind the cathedral is the Bishop's moated palace where tame swans ring a bell when they want to be fed. The gardens in the palace are loved abd both they & the cathedral have been used for filming (usually period dramas.)

Lots of interesting sites within a few miles--Cheddar Gorge with its glittering caves (Tolkien's inspiration for the caves of Aglarond), Wookey Hole, another set of caves with a more touristy theme, often used in films/tv, Glastonbury with its Abbey where king Arthur is said to have been buried & the Tor with its ruined medieval tower & shroud of ancient myths.
