England Captain Chris Robshaw nominated for player of the year award – Rugby News Update
Aviva Premiership Player of the Year award will be announced on the 8th of May, and England rugby captain, Chris Robshaw, is one of the candidates shortlisted for the prestigious award.
Robshaw plays for the Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership and is the current England captain of Rugby, leading the side to victories in the first two games of the Six Nations in 2012.
The current captain plays in the back-row and is one of the three back-row forwards to be nominated for the prize. He is also the only player on the list who has been nominated for the European Club Rugby (ERC) European Player of the Year award as well.
The full list includes Julian Salvi who plays for Leicester, Exeter’s James Scaysbrook, Mike Brown from the Harlequins, Nick Wood from Gloucester and mercurial Brad Barritt of the Saracens.
After hearing about his nomination, Robshaw was naturally excited, and he tweeted, "Extremely proud to be nominated for Aviva player of the year and great to see @mikebrown_15 there as well."
Chris made his Harlequins' debut in the 2005-2006 season scoring two tries in the 42-3 rout of Pertemps Bees at the Stoop. Since his debut he has impressed all and sundry, eventually earning his first England cap in 2009, against Argentina, on June 13 at Salta. So far he has represented England in 6 tests.
He was shortlisted along with the other five players by an elite panel of journalists covering the sport. The list includes names such as Miles Harrison from Sky Sports and Mick Cleary from the Daily Telegraph. The other names are Alastair Eykyn (BBC 5 Live), Ian Stafford (Mail on Sunday), Nick Mullins (ESPN), David Rogers (Getty Images), and Alan Pearey (Rugby World).
Robshaw had an outstanding 2011-2012 season, skippering his side to a 14 match unbeaten run, unprecedented in the history of Harlequins. His displays earned him the England captaincy, becoming one of the least experienced players to lead an English rugby side.
The 25-year-old Quins back-row still has many years ahead of him, and he is showing the promise that he displayed initially for the England Schools U18 side, which earned him his debut.
