England Expects pings to perfection to claim Grand Prix

England Expects (6-1) shocked crowds at Sunderland last night with a mighty performance to the land the £15,000 Grand Prix final over 640m.

It may have not been the result that everyone had hoped for, with Mark Wallis’ Kinda Easy a popular name on the betting slips after his class performance in the semi-finals.

Ready (5-4 favourite) was left surprisingly flat footed after failing to break, which saw any hopes of him paying any dividend fade fast, especially after Jimmy Wright’s Expects popped out of the boxes with perfection.

Expects clocked the fastest sectional and went on to eventually beat He Went Whoosh by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 39.50sec.

“Unbelievable,” said delighted owner Lee Unsworth afterwards. “He loves the track,” added Wright. “He’s improved and improved.”

Since trained under new handler Wright, Expects has really began to take a liking to Sunderland with only one defeat in his last six and it looks like the son of Westmead Hawk will now be targeted to compete in the Yorkshire St Leger later this year.
