England Grand Slam T-Shirts trashed after the defeat
It was a rumour which was confirmed by a leaked email from one of the official Rugby Football Union kit supplier that the designs for 2011 Grand Slam Champions were final and a bunch of shirts were ready. England’s team was supposed to wear the shirts on
the presentation ceremony if they had won, but the things turned out to be opposite.
The shirts had a mission statement under a rose and it read ‘Onwards’. Martin Johnson’s side was supposed to wear these shirts in Dublin after the final match’s victory. The email that got leaked had the designs and a little text from the supplying party.
It said, “We have commissioned a special limited edition T-shirt to celebrate the England Grand Slam 2011, which we will give to the players when we win against Ireland on Saturday.” The email is officially found out to be from the world class company ‘Nike’.
The jerseys that were printed were actually enthused by the signature English rose, the same as they use on England’s kit. Around 5000 units were ready to go in retail by Nike in all the Rugby Football Union stores and especially Nike Town in London shortly
after the closure of final match. By this we can assume the magnitude of loss that RFU had to suffer from. Financially it was a setback and at a moment when England’s team were already under the trauma of Irish defeat.
Nike official wrote further on, “In the spirit on owning sporting moments, we will also execute a burst of Digital Out-of-Home activity that will start right on the final whistle in over 20 of London’s most prominent underground stations through Digital
Escalator Panels and Cross-Track Projections.”
According to a Nike official, it has been confirmed that a video promo was also ready, which had all the English players’ clips from Six Nations tournament and a celebration T-Shirt at three different rates according to quality.
The official added, “It's unfortunate that this email has been leaked, and perhaps the lesson is to be less optimistic in our internal communications.”
Yet another lesson for the English team from the Six Nations.
