England Rugby great Peter Trunkfield passes away
Former Rugby player Peter Trunkfield, also known as Trunkers, passed away Tuesday night at the age of 80.
He was a massive figure and a leading English Rugby Union administrator. Peter Trunkfield served as President of the Rugby Football Union in 1998-99 and as a vice president to Peter Brook. For the past twenty years, he acted as a liaison officer for the
teams that toured from Southern Hemisphere. Trunkfield was a part of Buckinghamshire Rugby Union and Marlow Rugby Union Football Club. In his youth, he was a Bletchley RFC player.
Martyn Thomas, Rugby Football Union chairman paid tribute to Trunkfield by praising his cordial nature and love for the game.
“His involvement spanned the amateur and professional eras and I honestly don't think he had an enemy in the world,” said Martyn Thomas. Peter spent his lifetime in promoting and maintaining the quality of Rugby in England. Thomas holds up to the fact that
Peter Trunkfield was vigilant and active in his part of the game until his demise.
Thomas was one of the few persons who were with him in his last days. He further said, “He rang me and wrote to me on a regular basis and his wise counsel, as well as his genial nature, will long be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him.”
Peter Trunkfield was a huge asset for rugby and the most popular figure the game has ever seen. The top order genuine rugby man was dearly loved throughout his career and particularly within the community of his era, including his colleagues and former council
members.
Former England player Austin Healey said, “Rugby has lost one of its great characters.” Healey emotionally added, “Trunkers, we will miss you.”
England has lost another off-field giant this decade. Peter Trunkfield will always be remembered and cherished as the father of modern rugby in England and an untainted paradigm of discipline, friendship and a social giant.
