England Saxons crush Canada 37-6 in Final of Churchill Cup - Rugby News
England Saxons defeated the Canadian squad by a huge margin of 37-6 in the final of the Churchill Cup played on June 18.
The Canadians proved easy rivals for the Saxons as they hardly faced any resistance in the biggest match of the tournament. The Canadians were seen chasing the Saxons during most parts of the match. The English boys scored six tries in the match to secure
the title for the sixth time in their nine participations.
Rory Clegg started off for the Saxons on a penalty kick and that was only the start of the Saxons scoring spree. Ander Munro levelled the score three minutes later for Canada on a drop goal and their card was disturbed only once after that as James Prichard
kicked a successful penalty shot in the Saxons goals.
James Gaskell scored the first try of the match for England Saxons which was succeeded by another two consecutive tries by Benjamin and Rory Clegg during the first half. Benjamin and Clegg again performed for their side in the second-half and scored one
try each to put the Saxons in a comfortable position. The Saxons scored two more tries in the game as the Canadians were left running around in circles in their own defence line.
The ball possession was largely held by the Saxons during the match. However, the Canadian team did put up a fight in the first moments of the game.
Talking to reporters after the match, England Saxons skipper Jordan Crane, applauded his team for their brilliant efforts in the match. Crane said that it was an honour for him to lead a one of the youngest sides into the final.
He added that, “As long as everyone backs up their performances in the Churchill Cup with good starts to the Aviva Premiership and the Heineken Cup they'll be fine and there are some boys who've got a great future as England players ahead of them who've
played for the Saxons in this tournament.”
Talking about their opponent, Crane said that, "Canada were tough to break down, brought massive physicality and really frustrated us at times. It was our toughest game of the competition and it should be as a final, and we answered all the questions and
came away with a good scoreline in the end."
Meanwhile, Jordan Crane urged his side to keep up similar performances in the upcoming matches for the national side.
