  1. the answer to your question can vary hugely depending on when you travel

eg if you travel anywhere before 9 on a weekday morning, you'll pay the highest fare going

whereas if you travel on a weekend, or late daytime during the week, your ticket will be cheaper

if you pre-book, you can get a better discount

as for times, there'll generally be more trains running during the week (and no upgrades and maintenance on the lines) so you'll be able to travel faster then at weekends

  2. The above answer..

But when buying the tickets remember there are peak times of the day and the prices will vary on certain days/times/holidays. Sometimes buying a cheap day return will end up cheaper than a standard one way route. If you're 16-25 you can apply for a young persons rail card also (just get an application for from your local train station, fill it in with a passport size photo of you, costing £20), taking a third off all travel prices. It's worth it.
