England Under-19 v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 Under-19: 4th Youth ODI – First Innings Recap
South African Under-19s have posted a gigantic total of 298 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s Under-19 in the first innings of the fourth Youth One Day International (ODI), being played at Arundel Castle, Arundel, England on Saturday, July 23, 2011.
Since the series was levelled 1-1, both sides stepped into the game with an aim to take lead in the clash. Luck favoured the visiting side at toss and it was a simple decision for the South African skipper, Keaton Jennings, to bat first since the conditions
were ideal for the batsmen.
While the skipper himself failed to take advantage of batting-friendly track and lost his wicket to Reece Topley after scoring just one run, the other opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Quinton-de-Kock-c82885, justified his captain’s decision to bat first.
Kock shared the outstanding work at the crease with the one-down position batsman, Gihahn Cloete, as the two batsmen put together a classy 101-run-partnership for the second wicket, steering their side to a strong position.
Koch left the crease after hitting a marvellous knock of 66 including six lovely boundaries. However, Cloete continued the good work and smashed a thrilling century, his first one in the 50-over format.
Shaylin Pillay and James Price also chipped in with crucial innings of 42 and 31 runs respectively, but it was Cloete’s 124-run-knock that guided the tourists to 298 for the loss of five wickets in the allotted quota of 50 overs.
The 18-year-old left-hander toyed around with the line and length of English bowlers, hitting seven fours plus five towering sixes. After playing a vital knock, Cloete ran himself out in the last over of the innings. In the death overs, Diego Rosier hit
an aggressive innings of 12 runs with help of one sterling boundary.
From England’s bowling department, three bowlers, Topley, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aneesh-Kapil-c44658 and Peter Burgoyne, claimed one wicket each. However, the blistering batting by the Proteas batsmen did not let the English bowlers settle down throughout the game. Meanwhile, it was
shaky stuff by the bowlers as they gave away 20 extras including 13 wides plus two no-balls.
To win the critical contest, the Poms now require 299 at scoring rate of almost six-run per over. Although, the target is a huge one, it will not be an easy outing for the South Africans as the conditions are still favourable for batting.
