However, they rose to the task ably, chasing down a respectable 272 in only 44.2 overs for loss of just four wickets – the star of the show being Ben Foakes, who anchored the innings to produce a Player of the Match unbeaten 105.
After being sent into bat, the Kiwi openers provided a superb platform as Ben Horne and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Lumb-c1981 Carter added 136 for the first wicket. While the former was aggressive in his stroke play, the latter was content on rotating the strike.
Horne reached an imposing half-century and had his sights set on a three figure score before getting undone by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Abid-c76577 to depart on 81 – her boundary laden knock included 9 fours and five maximum strikes.
Carter (45) and Cam Fletcher (0) fell in tandem but skipper Will Young and Henry Wash kept the scorecard moving, adding 58 for the fourth wicket to help their side reach 201. The departure of the skipper saw the English bowlers making easy work of the lower order, with the last five falling on single digit scores.
Nonetheless, the Black Cups reached an imposing 271 for 9 in their 50 overs, with Walsh remaining not out on 61.
The Poms also got off to a quick start, given by their opening pairing of Daniel Bell- Drummond and Jack Leaning, who added 98 for the first wicket. Both fell in quick succession but captain Floakes continued the good work with a commanding ton.
He added 57 with Craig Overton (16) before steering the innings to its conclusion with an unbeaten 109, fifth-wicket stand with skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Ball-c41883 ( 46) – helping his side to reach to the victory total with more than five overs to spare.
