South Africa Under-19s defeated England Under-19s by just one wicket after a last ball finish in the 5th One Day International of the seven-match series at the County Ground, Taunton, on July 26, 2011.
This victory has ensured a 3-1 lead to the Proteas in the series and now they cannot lose the series even if England comes from behind and wins the last two encounters.
South African captain, Keaton Jennings, won the toss and elected to bowl first on a classic batting track. The only reason behind this move was the fact that the Proteas like to chase totals, instead of defending them.
The home team was off to a fantastic start through their openers, Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Wood. The two batsmen played some terrific shots and constructed a brilliant partnership of 133 runs for the first wicket.
Wicketkeeper/batsman, Sam Kelsall and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aneesh-Kapil-c44658 took the responsibility on their shoulders in the middle of the innings and scored 118 runs for the third-wicket partnership.
As a result, England posted a big score of 300 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Drummond remained the top scorer for his team as he made 72 crucial runs off 83 balls in which he struck nine boundaries. Kelsall also shined with 64 runs off 78 balls with the help of seven fours.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wood-c98110 and Kapil also scored crafty half-centuries to help their team’s cause; however, Kapil’s innings was more important as it came at a brisk strike rate.
Prenelan Subrayen and Keaton Jennings picked up a couple of wickets to somehow halt the English progress.
Chasing a big target in the second innings, the Proteas were off to a poor start as they lost their premier batsmen, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Quinton-de-Kock-c82885 and Gihahn Cloete, who were dismissed cheaply and the English team seemed to have a strong grip on the
match.
However, Shaylin Pillay and James Price played extra-ordinarily in the middle of the innings to put their team back on course. Calvin Savage and Subrayen showed their skills with the bat at the depth of the innings and helped their team
cross the line on the very last ball of the match.
Price and Pillay scored crucial half-centuries for the visitors; whereas, Savage and Subrayen played match-winning cameos of 46 and 48 runs respectively.
Jamie Overton and Bret Hutton claimed a couple of scalps each but failed to come in the way of South Africa and victory.
This is a heartening victory for the visitors as their senior team has failed to finish off some crucial matches in the past, but the new breed of South African cricketers seem to have a big heart.
