England announce final Fifa World Cup squad
The omissions of Theo Walcott and Leighton Baines were the main talking points of Fabio Capello’s 23-man England squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
Arsenal winger Walcott and Everton left back Baines had been widely tipped to make the squad, but both were overlooked in favour of Manchester City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips and the Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock. Gareth Barry has also been selected despite fears over his fitness.
Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Matt Dawson and Darren Bent were the other members of Capello’s provisional squad who have failed to make the cut.
Ledley King, Emile Heskey, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jamie Carragher were all included in the squad, the latter after he came out of international retirement.
England kick off their Group C campaign against the USA in Rustenburg on June 12th, before further matches against Algeria and Slovenia.
Widely tipped to do well at the tournament, England are seeking their first World Cup win since 1966.
