England announces its preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup
The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced its 30-man preliminary squad for next year’s World Cup tournament. Andrew Strauss has been retained as the captain for the World Cup campaign. The squad would
be trimmed to 15 players by the 19th of next month.
Fast bowler Stuart Broad, who is struggling with a torn abdominal muscle, which ruled him out of the ongoing Ashes series, has been included in the squad. Alastair Cook, Matt Prior and Steven Finn, who are
part of England’s Ashes squad but not included in the One-Day legs of the ongoing tour have also been included in the list of probables.
Geoff Miller, the national selector of England, said that the players have been selected on the basis of their previous performances.
"We have selected a squad of players with a strong track record in limited-overs cricket either for England or in the domestic game,” said Miler. “Recent series have shown we have made progress in One-Day
cricket and we will be looking to continue this form during next year's World Cup and challenge for another global title," he added.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nottinghamshire-c826 all-rounder Samit Patel has been included in the preliminary squad giving him an opportunity to prove his mettle ahead of the esteemed tournament which gets underway in the Subcontinent on
February 19th, next year. His inclusion in the 30-man squad preliminary squad is perhaps the most surprising selection as he has long been overlooked by the English selectors for an apparently indifferent attitude and erratic approach towards fitness
necessary to compliment his indubitable talent.
The hard-hitting but technically accurate batting at the lower-orders and impressive left-arm off-spin of Patel would be an asset for England on the slow tracks of the Subcontinent.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Samit-Patel-c2426 has also been included in this preliminary squad and - along with every other player named - will be required to meet individual fitness criteria before the squad is finalised," said the national
selector. "There is still some time to pass before the final squad is selected, so all 30 players have sufficient time to press for selection."
England has been placed in Group B, which includes India, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748
