England captain Rio Ferdinand suffers injury scare
England have potentially been dealt a massive blow ahead of the World Cup finals after captain Rio Ferdinand picked up a knee injury in the team’s first training session in South Africa.
The Manchester United defender, 31, who suffered with injuries throughout the last league campaign, has been sent for a scan at a local hospital in Rustenburg, where England are based, with early reports indicating that the injury could be serious enough to rule him out of the entire tournament, and certainly England’s first match against the USA in eight days time.
Suggestions have also been made that Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson – who was dropped from Fabio Capello’s provisional squad – could be called up to replace Ferdinand, with Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard taking over as captain.
Capello though, as ever, is cautious.
“It was in a normal tackle and after he turned, it was the lateral [knee ligament],” he said.
“We'll have to wait for the scan.”
