England continue superb run as they beat Austria in Amsterdam
In the second day of the 2011 European Mixed Team Badminton Championships, England maintained the top position in the group, as all of the English players emerged victorious against Austria, in yesterday’s group match at Amsterdam. The English players were
just incredible throughout the match, giving no opportunity to the opponents to control the game. England won the match by a 5-0 score and is leading the group number three with nine points. Ireland is just behind in the same group with seven points.
The first women’s single was played between England’s Sarah Walker and Simone Prutsch of Austria. Walker won the opening game with a margin of 21-13. The second game was an absolute thriller, as both players worked very hard, as Walker took the ending points
impressively with a score of 23-21. She took 30 minutes to beat her opponent by the score of 21-13, 23-21.
The second battle was the men’s singles that was played between England’s Carl Baxter and Michael Lahnsteiner of Austria. It was a thrilling 52 minute battle as the Austrian started the game in an authoritative way, as he grabbed the first set by the score
of 21-17. Stung by the loss of the opening set, Baxter fought back and managed to win the second set with a considerable margin of 21-13. He continued his aggressive play in the third set and finished it up with 21-9 score on the board.
In the women’s doubles, English pair Jennifer Wallwork and Gabrielle White took on the Austrian duo of Elizabeth Baldauf and Simone Prutsch. The English pair showed no mercy to the Austrians, as they won the first set by a clear margin of 21-13. In the second
set, the duo from England punished the Austrians, beating them with a 21-10 margin. Wallwork and White took only 25 minutes to take the victory for their team.
The fourth fight was between the men’s doubles pairs from both countries. It was the most thrilling 64 minute fight, as England’s pair, Anthony Clarke and Chris Langridge won the first set by 21-19. The Austrian pair of Jurgen Koch and Peter Zauner came
back in the match by winning second set by the same score of 21-19. In the final set, the English players dominated the game and finished it up by with 21-14 score on the board. In the final mixed doubles battle, Chris Adcock and Gabrielle White from England
defeated Roman Zimwald and Elizabeth Baldauf in straight games. The English women kept their opponents moving around the court by keeping the pace of the game high. They took only 23 minutes to finish it up with a 21-18, 21-14 win.
England managed to dominate the proceedings by not allowing the Austrians to play their natural game. It will be exciting to see how England manages to carry their winning momentum forward in the tournament.
