England defeat Scotland by 5-1
England, the reigning European Champions, defeated Scotland by 5-1 in their final match of the invitational Four Nations tournament played at Inverclyde, Scotland, on June 14.
Scotland already lost their previous matches of the tournament, one against Spain while the other against Germany.
Despite the fact that the Scottish team had lost its entire three matches yet they experienced a number of valuable and positive things in this tournament in which the top European teams participated.
“These sides have given us a measure for what we have to do to aspire to their level. Our opponents in the Champions Challenge and European Nations Trophy are not in the same league as this weekend’s teams,” Eugene Connolly, the Scottish team manager explained
after the conclusion of the match.
The Scottish team’s performance in this game was not very different from the previous two matches, as they made some wonderful efforts, but there was no match between the Brits and Scottish men.
In the first half of the match, both teams played a balanced hockey, especially in the first fifteen to twenty minutes a number of chances were created by both teams, but the luck was with Scotland, as they first broke the dead-lock and took the lead, thanks
to Derek Salmond who scored on a low drag flick. But soon after the Scottish goal, the English side earned a penalty-stroke when the Scottish goal-keeper, Phil Carr, made a foul and also received a green card. The English team utilised this chance very well
and levelled the score in the 31stminute.
It was not more than thirty seconds after the equaliser when the English side scored the second goal and this time, Rob Moore was the scorer who put his team ahead of the hosts. The English team did not stop, instead they kept on going with the same speed
and just before the end of first half they scored once again. James Tindall tripled the lead with a beautiful goal. The first half closed at 3-1 to England.
The English team also dominated the Scottish side in the second half and scored two more goals making the score five goals to one. The fourth one was scored in the middle stages of the first half and the last goal was delivered five minutes before the match
concluded. Both of the goals were scored by Nick Catlin. England won the match by 5-1.
