England defeats Australia by 3-2 in 2011 Rabo FIH Women’s Champions Trophy: Hockey News
The second and the final match of the day at 2011 Rabo FIH Women’s Champions Trophy concluded at Wagner Stadium, in Amsterdam, Netherlands with a historic win for the English women who defeated Australia’s Hockeyroos by 3-2 for the first time in the
history of Champions Trophy.
In the first half, England took the crucial lead over the Hockeyroos that lasted till the interval, while the remaining four goals were scored in the second half, two by the each side. Kate Walsh, Anne Panter and Nicola White made their contribution
in this historic victory by ticking the score-board once in the match, while both of the Hockeyroos’ goals were scored by Mamie Hudson.
Kate Walsh’s goal was the most special gift for the English team as it was the first ever goal for England against the Hockeyroos in the Champions Trophy matches as the English team had lost all of its previous three matches against Australia without
scoring a goal.
Danny Kerry, the coach of the English side, looked very pleased over the performance of his team against the Hockeyroos.
“We went into the match with a couple of plans depending on what happened in the previous game.  Having seen the result we adjusted accordingly,” Danny Kerry, the head coach of the English team stated about their planning and strategy after the historic
victory over Australia’s Hockeyroos.
“We played alright at times but we still gave the ball away a bit too often.  Laura Unsworth played well at full back and it was good to see she can play in a variety of positions.” He further stated about the performance of some of his athletes.
Earlier in the first match of the day, Germany outclassed the Chinese women by 4-1 and with China’s defeat, both the teams; Australia and England once again will be in front of each other on Sunday, July 3 in a play-off game for the 5th and
6th position, while Germany and China will play for the 7th and 8th position. The Hockeyroos may have another chance to take their revenge from the English athletes.
