  1. I think you'll find that most British trains are diesel too.

  2. its true

  3. In the northeast, the only area of our country comparable to England, our trains are electric and go 150mph. U.S. trains comply with tough FRA safety standards, and tragically, British trains do not, causing unnaturally high casualties in derailments and collisions.

In the west, U.S. trains are full double deck and quite luxurious.

"tech" hardly matters in railways.  Electric railways were invented here in America by our own Frank Sprague.

The British freight system is terrible and a total money loser. A dismal fraction of British goods move by rail, and the obsolete coupler arrangements make for unprofitably short trains. The American freight system is profit-making and totally overwhelmed by its own success.

When British lines are unsuccessful, they are abandoned.  When American lines are unsuccessful, they are sold or leased to an enterprising shortline operator who finds new ways to make money on the line.

British lines wear out the rails then look to the government to fix them.  American freight railroads own and maintain the rails themselves and then pay property tax on them. The industry has an association called the AAR, with a massive testing lab to discover new ways to run railroads more efficiently.  They have figured out how to make steel rails last 5 times longer - that's a big thing.  Britain is slow to adopt the Americans' new ideas, because their railroads have a complex multiple ownership arrangement which stifles innovation and efficiency.

Britain could learn a lot from the Americans.  You'd have safer, cheaper and more profitable railroads, stronger industry and a lot fewer lorries on the road.
