England holds off Brazil 8-6 in Coronation Cup – Polo Update
Luke Tomlinson was dazzling and had an assist, as England’s Polo Team marked an 8-6 win over Brazil in the Coronation Cup being played at the Smiths Lawn of Guards Polo Club in Windsor in connection with Cartier International Day on July 24.
It was one of the competitive shows between the two polo enthusiast countries which contested the fixture under the soaring blue sky.
Amazingly, the game itself was more than a delightful competition where both the teams showcased striking performances. Luke Tomlinson, the English skipper and his brother Mark Tomlinson displayed outstanding games either on the defence or offence. The two
players overwhelmed Joao Paulo Ganon and Rodrigo Andrade.
Jose Eduardo Kalil, the captain of the Brazilian side talking to the media stated that the ponies play a vital role in the defeats and victories. He said, “The horses had a great impact on our game they were well mounted and we are grateful for them, but
the game was particularly tough not playing on our own horses.”
Incredibly, the English side received a goal in the head of lower-handicap team and doubled the tally in the very early minutes of the first chukka. It was no one else than Luke Tomlinson who marked the first goal after making a lengthy ride towards down-field.
Following that they continued their attacking game and held back the edge throughout the first three chukkas.
In the later time, Luke Tomlinson and Rodrigo Andrade collided into each other and both the horses and players remained safe. After a little stoppage, both players changed their mares and restarted the game with more strength. The two brothers were dominating
throughout the second frame but failed to make an addition on the scoreboard. After missing some chances, James Beim of England received a pass from Luke Tomlinson and scored his first goal of the day. In the later time, Luke added one more into the scoring.
From the other side, Luis Paulo Bastos came into action in the late minutes of the first half and reduced the lead by scoring two penalty-shot goals. The English team was sitting ahead by two goals, 4-2 at the half-time.
Brazilian skipper Kalil was replaced with Calao Mello in half-time due to ankle injury. Ganon of Brazil scored off a penalty shot which was replied by two goals from Luke Tomlinson and Andrade. The action continued from the two sides and the Brazilians improved
their position in the fifth and took the score up to six goals against the seven of England.
In the last chukka, Gonzales scored off another and sealed the victory on the big day at 8-6 over Brazil.
