England hopeful of a good showing at the Sevens event – Rugby News Update
HSBC Sevens World Series returns to England for a two-day extravaganza, with over a 100,000 fans expected to participate at the event. The England Sevens coach, Ben Ryan, is hopeful that his side can finish on a high at Twickenham.
"Last weekend was a big step in the direction of travel for this team and England Sevens," Ryan wrote in his column for RFU.com. "We have always wanted to play a fast attacking style but it has taken time to really hit its straps. It's not a quick fix and
it takes time to put in this sort of cultural model into play.”
Last week, they were playing at Glasgow, where they eventually lost to New Zealand in the final. Ryan saw progress with the team’s play, and he is hopeful if they stay on this path they will triumph like they did in 2009.
With the current standings only New Zealand and Fiji can claim the top prize with England coming a respectable third. Ryan wants his team to play their heart out for the fans who will head to England Rugby HQ for the event.
He further added, "..We left disappointed but also quietly pleased now we know that our style is bedded in and as more games are played the confidence will grow and we will improve more and more."
England currently has some injury problems to content with but they have able back-ups to call upon. The former England U20 wing, Mark Odejobi, fractured a bone in his foot last weekend, while Ryan has recalled former captain Andy Vilk into the squad, along
with newcomer Jeff Williams.
Ryan will be hoping for one final push from his team, and even though they cannot win, he will hope that his players play for the country and the fans.
