England in India – Series Review – Part Two
After suffering a humiliating defeat against India in the first One Day (ODI) International of the five match series, England moved to the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 on Monday, October 17, 2011.
The tourists’ skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026 was confident of bouncing back into the series by winning the second ODI, but he suffered another crushing defeat by eight wickets.
England batted first this time around and managed only 237 runs on a good batting pitch. The team was once again unable to bat the entire 50 overs of the innings and got all out in 48.2 overs. They were all out in 36.1 overs in the opening match of the series.
Cook was lucky to win the toss in the second match of the series and would have hoped for a solid batting display.
However, the Poms could not have got off to a bad start, as they did in this game. Openers Cook and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/C-Kieswetter-c1206 failed to get going and were dismissed without scoring any runs on the board.
With two wickets down for no runs on the board, the visitors were on the back foot right from the start of their innings.
However, star middle-order players http://www.senore.com/Cricket/IJL-Trott-c1576 rescued the team from trouble. They put on 48 runs for the third wicket partnership, giving some momentum to the innings before the latter was sent back to the pavilion after contributing
34 runs to the total.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RS-Bopara-c2373 and Pietersen managed to guide the team out of trouble with a 73-run stand for the fourth wicket. They batted nicely, but would have liked to stay
in the middle a little longer than they did.
Both batsmen got out on a total of 121 runs, leaving the team under immense pressure. Bopara was the first one to go after contributing 36 runs to the total. He was followed by Pietersen, who managed 46 runs with the help of three fours and a couple of sixes.
The innings was then stabilised by youngster Jonny Bairstow and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Samit-Patel-c2426, as the pair put together 86 runs for the sixth wicket partnership. However, anyone of them should have batted until the end of the innings in order to take England past 270.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Huzefa-Mohammed-Patel-c63657 got out in the 42nd over of the innings after collecting 42 runs with the help of a couple of fours and the same number of sixes. He was followed by Bairstow, who scored 35 runs before being dismissed.
The tail-enders were unable to score runs quickly and wickets kept on falling regularly, resulting England all out for 237 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Vinay-Kumar-c2237 had a tremendous outing, as he picked up four wickets in his nine overs, conceding just 30 runs.
The Men in Blue failed to get off to a good start, losing openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 took the game away from the opposition with an unbeaten 209-run stand for the third wicket. They scored 84
and 112 runs respectively, chasing the target down in just 36.4 overs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TT-Bresnan-c2711 was the lone wicket taker of the match for the Poms, as he removed both openers early in the innings. However, there was no support for him from the other end, as India took a 2-0 lead in the series.
