England look better for battle, Kevin Davies and Robert Green receive surprise invitations (Part 2)
It seems that Arsenal are truly proving to be an arsenal of new young English players. Kieran Gibbs’ team mate Jack Wilshere, who has been included in the Three Lions squad has already featured for Arsenal in 8 of their 10 games
this season. It seems that Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger has found himself a couple of gems after all.
Wilshere is the 10th youngest player that has featured for England. It occurred in his match against Hungary at Wembley this year in August. After that however he went unnoticed in the first two qualification games of
England.
Liverpool’s star midfielder via free transfer from Chelsea, Joe Cole has also been remembered along with the lagging Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone. Both Spurs players are struggling with their form this
season therefore their inclusion is controversial.
Nevertheless among this list the most dramatic call up is of Kevin Davies who had stated that he no longer expected an invitation from the Three Lions. The 33 year old forward stated that he was proud to be called up for international
duty.
In a press release, Bolton’s star striker Davies stated, “I just have to go along and enjoy the experience of being involved with the international team and if I get the chance to play I will do my best to impress. It is a really
proud moment for me and my family.”
He added, “I am sure there will be a few nerves over the next couple of days and it hasn't really sunk in yet, but I am looking forward to this opportunity and I'm going to give it my best shot.”
England are already facing a deficiency in their starting strikers as Bobby Zamora and Jermain Defoe have been ruled out because of injuries. The Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey has announced his retirement and therefore he would
not be in contention anymore leaving it up to Davies in the experience department to help Three Lions get some glory.
He will be lined up with Darren Bent, Peter Crouch and Wayne Rooney; therefore he surely will have a tough time to prove he is starting lineup material on 12th of October when England play against Montenegro.
Currently both England and Montenegro are at the top of Group G, having won their first two matches, acquiring 6 points in the process. Montenegro have defeated Wales and Bulgaria with a margin of 1-0.
The England squad for Montenegro match includes: Ben Foster (Birmingham City), Robert Green (West Ham United), Joe Hart (Manchester City); Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand
(Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa); Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Joe Cole (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), Adam Johnson (Manchester City),
Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa); Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Davies (Bolton Wanderers), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).
